The Colorful Leash

“The Big black dog follows us everywhere, as their tail wags with happiness the opposite comes to us, their howls of anxiety at night that keep us awake and the pitch-black thunder clouds that they put in our heads with menacing thunderstruck of sadness and regrets. They latch their fangs into us, distributing a disease of sorrow and madness. Their claws leave scars of pain and memories of disappointment that repeat from time to time. It’s an endless battle of emotion and thoughts. They are waiting for the right time to pounce and hold into us then drain every drop of positivity.” How can we end this rage of darkness? Is there any way to turn this cold dark place into a warm bit of sunshine?

Photo by Matser in Mind via Twittter

The big black dog is a metaphor for depression for William Churchill, is a wild beast companion, if not manage it will grow large and eventually consuming you with negativity. If not controlled in the early state like putting it in a leash, it will be destructive and can cause a serious problem if not managed well.

Art therapy is one of the ways to cage the Big black dog, It’s a colorful leash that involves your imagination and ideas through art. According to Douglas Mitchel (2012), Art therapy has become an effective treatment in supporting, releasing, and integrating the symptoms of depression by supporting you in exploring depression via the senses. Although art might seem less conventional, it can be just as effective as talk therapy because it utilizes the whole body experience and not just the intellect. Researchers found that mindful art therapy significantly reduced levels of depression, anxiety, aggression, and anger. Although the study was small in several participants and focused specifically on people with heart disease, the research offers promising and creative methods to relieve stress, reduce depression, and better manage anxiety and anger. Many of the activities can be done at home on your own and are a simple, fun way to introduce mindfulness into your daily life by Marlynn Wei (2018).

Arts seems to lead us in a new world, some would say it’s their place to escape from the toxic reality. It’s their instrument to let go of the pessimism. Form of arts and tools like coloring books, painting, and other things that you can focus on, it can help you battle and forget about the wild beast. If you are not able to speak your problem by words then express it through art. Creative hobbies can surely save your mental health. Making your mind strong and also finding yourself another skill or ability that you might pursue in the future.

If you are battling depression or another kind of stress, let the acrylics and pencils help you relieve your emotional and mental pain. Approach your big black dog with your inventiveness to soften its growl, grip on its leash and tie it on a tree of positivity.

The Rising Pheonix of Philippine Culture

The Philippines, the pearl of the Orient Sea, a country filled with colorful cultures and traditions, from the ravishing and extravagant countless festivals to the textile patterns of embroidery in clothes. Once you mentioned the word The Philippines, the pride and joy rise as the Filipinos are proud of their creativity, craftsmanship, and inventiveness.

Starting from a long line of creativity of Filipinos, from our Ancestors to the modern artist that you see today are the descendants of the revolving artistry and never fading culture. The evolution of Philippine art is constant, from a drop of ink and pieces of wood, stone, clay, metals to fiber canvasses, and even through digital or manipulation of technology, has been symbolizing the rich culture of the Philippines. In their works of art, it has always been depicting and showing the lives of Filipinos, showcasing their spiritual beliefs and histories or issues that they’ve faced in different eras artfully.
Today, these pieces of art are kept and protected in a box made of thick sheets of glasses or hanged in walls of different museums in the country. It is considered as a national treasure and representation of history, mostly referred to as priceless.

Not all artifacts of artful history are seen in museums but from the people who continue to resuscitate and appreciate. A reviving form of art made from ink has been catching the interest of many people. Tattoo Artist from all over the world has been practicing it to resurrect its beauty, importance, and uniqueness.

Photo from Facebook, Baybayin Word PH

The Baybayin is a pre-colonial beautiful ancient writing script of the Islands of the Philippines. Incorrectly known as Alibata, Baybayin has been a core part of our culture and heritage for centuries. It has been the soul interconnectivity of our ancestors through writing. Discovered in 1604 by a priest from colonizers, it was considered as a demonic work hence burning some of it. Luckily, some kept the scriptures and continues to learn it.

Photo from What’s Happening PH

Today’s Millenials are obsessed with its beauty and some of them are practicing it as a form of calligraphy and even making fonts through our mobile phones. The 17-characters indigenous scripture has been making a comeback throughout these years. I’ve know Baybayin but I was able to learn it now in College from our textbooks. Although from the looks of it, you might find it easy to learn, you must understand it’s used and memorize it all by heart. When I visited Boracay most of its souvenirs have the symbols Baybayin is written on it.

Photo from Pinterest

Just like the Ibong Adarna or a bird-like Pheonix form the Filipino Tales, the Baybayin rose from the ashes and continues to spread a wildfire of interest to the people due to its form and distinctiveness. Using it in some inspirational quotes, poems, and even to write down songs.

You see, culture and history cannot be separated. It can create or discover an Art that can truly represent out Pride and our Nation. I’m happy to see that many of the new generations are doing their best to bring this part of our culture into life and make it easy to learn by involving their interest, and passion mostly in Art. MABUHAY!

Passion-Inspiration:Kapampangan Artist

He became an inspiration, his heartening story is seen by many people as a symbol of courage. He is a soldier, his weapons are the wisdom that he embodies, and the creativity that he showcases. Despite having a disability, he has given a unique ability or skill in arts. Meet Mr. Erwin Y. Dayrit, the Kapampangan artist with an eternal smile.

Photo from Byaheng1.rssing.Com: The Philippine Eagle

I’ve known him when I joined the Famous group of Guhit-Pinas, I always see his works featured, especially his portrait of Apo Whang Od (The last Mambabatok), the details, color, and his technique is beyond belief. Working with a ballpen is not a joke, I’m telling you. You can’t just erase it just like a pencil, or cover it up with a correction tape when you made a mistake(I enjoy Challenges-He said). He works with acrylics and other mediums but Ballpen Art is different, using different colors of pen creating spectacular portraits and subjects.

Photo from Philnews. PH: Apo Whang Od

His Physical difficulty is not a hindrance to pursuing his passion for Art. Born on September 30, 1979, with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a condition is also known as Bittle Bone disease that causes curved and fragile bones.

Due to his condition, he uses a wheelchair to get around. Some didn’t understand his condition, but he remained positive and even graduated in college with a course in Drafting at the Don Honorio Ventura State University.

Mr. Erwin was applauded because of his works and courage, he even got a chance to be featured in an episode of Magpakailanman. His story sparks motivation and influence for many aspiring artists like me. He even met the People’s Champ Manny Pacquiao by giving his self-made portrait of the Famous Philippine Boxer.

Today, Mr. Erwin is the Mentor of many artists and the Group,Guhit-Pinas. He supports groups and organizations that advocates to help people with disability (PWD) like him. He engages and attends art conventions and exhibits to do some demos.

“Erwin is determined to prove that his condition will not prevent him from doing the things he enjoys most. Being disabled is not a choice but being happy to fulfill dreams is!”-Dayrit’s sister Zorina told Filipino Artists Magazine.

Let us not forget our local artists, they bring overwhelming pride and joy to our Country. #Support#Courage#Passion.

Although she is the last of her kind, she is truly a treasure in Filipino Culture. We are talking about the Oldest Filipino Tribal Artist, the one and only Apo Whang Od. Her strong passion for tattooing is just incredible. In her 103 years of existence, her art never fades like the tattoos that she has done for the past 80 years up to this day.

Visitors who want to have an appointment with Whang Od are requested to bring offerings or gifts like food, medicine, and even matches, which are very important in their daily chores and activities.

Creative Resourcefulness

Hey fellow artist, Do you want to do something fun while being quarantined? Want to create something but no Art Materials? Lucky you! Today I will share some ideas to improve your skills by using objects that are mostly found in your home.

True, materials are essential in bringing your artistic vision to life. It is a weapon for inventive and gifted minds. Pastels, watercolors, and acrylic paints in a multitude of colors that gives life and meaning to your artwork. The medium, blending and choosing colors that gives an artistic expression to your creativity.

The availability of Art materials today is hard due to some restrictions brought by the Enhance Community Quarantine. Temporarily closed art supplies stores and the difficulty to go out is the main problem for some aspiring artists. In my situation, I left all of my art materials in my Boarding house, which is a bad decision that I’ve made.

Bored, I did some digging on the internet and came up with great ideas to help you out with your restless creative minds. Many artistes became resourceful and found some ways to deal with their restive imagination. Here are some of my Ideas and Abby ‘Splodge’ (2013)

1.Coffee Painting

Photo from Steemit. com

Well, Coffee is an artist’s best friend, it serves as a stimulant that increases your wakefulness and the ability to focus when doing projects or commissions. Aside from this kind of purpose, it is also used as a medium. Coffee painting is an amazing art from a common household item. It is created by simply adding coffee and water. This type of paint varies by the strength of different tones made by the coffee.

2. Egg Yolk and Spices

Photo from Pinterest.com

This is also known as Tempera painting which dates back 600 years ago where oil-based paints have not yet existed. Egg yolk has the same consistency as paints. Mixed with colorful spices, it can create beautiful shades of color that can be used as an alternative for acrylic paints. The egg white can be also used as a glaze or varnish on the finished painting.

3. PVA glue and Pigment

Photo by Wenn Marc C. Duce

Same as the egg yolk, PVA Glue has the same characteristics as the Egg yolk, the stickiness, and viscosity. To make this, I used my leftover chalky watercolor, PVA Glue and a small amount of water to create this kind of paint.

4. Charcoal

Photo from Joybilee® Farm

Not a painter? You’re in luck, Try this method. Charcoal can be found everywhere, the kitchen, the griller or just burning small amounts of wood. Use sandpaper to create powdered charcoal or create a pencil size charcoal for sketching. I recommend using some brush to remove excess charcoal powder to make your sketch clean.

Of course, we should not forget the tools to be used in making these kinds of art. No Brushes? Here are some ideas that can help you to make some by Ana Dziengel (2013)

ART BLOCK

Photo from DeviantArt

My wall of doubt blocks the path, I can’t imagine anything but this madness I have, Squeezing my dried-up brain to get a drop of brilliance, yet nothing is left but self-doubt. Crumpled papers start to build up in my room, scratch to trash due to the inconsistency of my imagination. How devastated I am that I’ve lost my passion. I stared at my blank paper, grab my pencil, and draw a line but it stopped, I can’t continue because my mind is blocked.

This experience is nothing new as many artists encountered what so-called Art Block. Art block or Creative block is the time when an artist has no idea where to start or what to draw. They cannot access their creativity or they cannot bring themselves to create a new piece of work. An artist that is exhausted is vulnerable in the art block. Stress caused by the environment and also the lack of trust in his/her ability.

All creative people do experience art block and it also applies in any form of art. Persons that have a profession related to art battles this kind of difficulty. There are plenty of reasons or causes of an art block.

The environment
Noise such as dog barks, Car engines, and loud conversation are some of the distractions that can easily alter or lose your focus. Apart from this distraction is the mental noise that you are dealing with, this might be problems involving your personal or social life, It can affect your mind hence blocking your inventiveness.

Pressure
In a profession related to art, there is no doubt that some clients will give you a hard time like their expectations, In personal pressure like over-thinking and carrying many things on your shoulder that eventually led to your collapse and a hard time making a new idea

Self Doubt
Overthink and not trusting yourself can easily affect your artistry. It is the number one enemy for many artists due to low confidence and questioning their ability.

Criticism
It’s hard to accept the truth, people will often judge your work based on what they see. Criticism can reduce confidence and motivation which can lead to self-doubt.

Turn your problems into courage according to Phil Stutz and Barry Michels in their book called The Tools. It is supposed to help people who deal with Art block or Creative Block. In their book, there are five ways to deal with it.

Force yourself

As much as you don’t want to hear it, forcing yourself is one of the ways to get over creative block. Force yourself by having a ritual that leads to work, force yourself to sit by your desk even if nothing is coming into your head, or force yourself by doodling or writing something on the screen. Sometimes the creative juices start flowing when you doodle aimlessly.

Block out negative thoughts

Most of the time we are distracted by negative thoughts. This will never be good enough/I’m a terrible writer/designer/I’ll be fired as soon as I show my work/they don’t like me here… Recognize those thoughts? I bet you do. No creative person that brings something new into the world is devoid of those thoughts. Learn how to block them. If you can command your brain not to think about them, your creativity may begin to flow.

Go for a walk or a run

Physical activity is one of the things that might wake the brain up. Murakami, the famous Japanese writer is a runner. He claims that running almost every day clears his mind because he doesn’t think about anything while he runs. He listens to his breathing, to his footsteps, to the wind in the trees but hardly ever thinks about what he is about to write.

Take a nap

I have heard that trick from many writers. When they are stuck and nothing comes up they take a short nap. Sometimes ‘sleeping on it’ works and things become clearer. Even if they don’t become clear, at least you are refreshed now and can sit for another 2 hours by your desk.

Meditate

In other words, again, empty your mind and don’t bother with your feelings. Concentrate on something outside of you – a word, a rhyme, a color inside your eyelids. Sometimes you might fall asleep and that brings us to the benefits of a nap, Sometimes you will wake up feeling rejuvenated.

Art block can be easily cured you just need to appreciate your work and be proud of it. Stop thinking of what-ifs and start believing in yourself. Acceptance is a must, you just need to accept everything and turn everything into strength. Rather than pressuring yourself find a time to enjoy and relax to clear your head from negativity.

Santos, F.(2012)5 WAYS TO UNBLOCK YOUR CREATIVITY
https://thedeependdesign.com/5-ways-to-unblock-your-creativity/

I Learned, I Share

My heart is trembling, knees are shaking, butterflies in my stomach, and that feeling of excitement with doubt, questioning myself if I can do this, or another waste of time and materials.

I always fear that I will not do my best or disappoint the Grade level that I’m representing. I never got that idea of joining this kind of contest. I always do Art to express my thoughts and feelings, my happy place, or stress reliever when I’m at my darkest moment.

The first contest was way back when I was In Elementary. It was a nerve-wracking moment as I can remember, a first-timer with no plans, practice, or any clue of what is an On the Spot-Poster Making Contest. I’m just sitting there with a blank mind, holding a pencil, and had no idea. It was a Celebration for “Buwan ng Wika” I didn’t even know what the theme is or what are the criteria where I can base my work. That day I lost, I was sorrowful, but I never gave up and joined again.
Years have passed, a lost streak slapped me. I was thinking of giving up and planning to end it. I was a 1st-year Highschool I joined another contest about Nutrition Month. That day I was Calm and excited with no pressure. I enjoyed the 3 hours of sketching and coloring even my hands are in pain, the results came up, and I was 3rd place. There is still hope I continued practicing like watching tutorials and asking pieces of advice from my teachers to improve my abilities, and everything paid off.

I am still not a pro in this kind of competition, but I want to share some tips based on my experience in joining an On the Spot Poster Making Contest.

1. If you are a beginner in this kind of competition, always think positive. Never let your doubts and fear gobble you to the point you’ll lose hope and confidence.

2. Calm Down, it’s ok to be excited or be nervous but never let these things overshadow yourself, Over excitement and being apprehensive might lose your focus during the contest.

3. Prepare, Aside from buying materials that you’ll need, listen to the announcement of the Given theme and criteria. Think in advance of concepts and ideas that you want to tell based on the given theme.

4. Originality, getting ideas from the internet is ok, but Use your imagination and explore.

5. Pay attention to every detail of you drawing, Use bright colors that will create contrast and make good use of space.

6. Focus on what you are making, never compare your work to your fellow participants.

7. Use your time wisely, Moving too fast will make your poster messy, and moving too slow might lead to unfinished work.

8. Enjoy ( the most important)

Photo by Wenn Marc C. Duce

“I am the one who made this. I made this back in 2016 when I was a Grade 9 student. My friend requested me to do a poster about out of school youth and how education can change their lives, it is for a youth organization that promotes and teaches the importance of education. I used oil pastels and watercolors to create this masterpiece. It won, as the First runner up and I was happy because everything was worth it. This poster tells about how education can change the perspective and lives of many people. Better quality of education sparks inspiration and hope for those who are living in poverty and ill-educated ones. It can transform a person into a better version and creates a domino effect on others who are willing to improve themselves. Knowledge doesn’t only apply individually but as a nation that helps the country to rise and grow. Posters can deliver meaningful messages that can inspire and motivate in different ways based on the interpretation of the image. With the use of abilities in Poster Making, I am proud that I am one of those people who inspire and somehow can change a person’s life.”

I hope you learned a lot from my story and tips about Poster Making. Be a model and continue to inspire with your God-given talent.

FUN of Memes: COVID-19

How is life being self quarantined? Do you find it boring? Do you enjoy the Online Class?

Aklan State University is one of the schools who engage in the alternative online class the “Work from Home”. Just like the regular class days, students must attend or be online in the schedules of their different courses or subjects. The teachers are tasked to give an alternative way of learning for students, like paper works, and by using social media. In this way, students must stay in their homes for their safety.

Meme by: Kenneth Baylon

Some students find staying at home is a little bit boring and the only solution to their boredom is the use of social media. As I can observe, many students enjoy the new trend of making fun videos and posting Memes about the latest happening in the country. Many students make funny jokes about the COVID-19 to relieve their weariness and fear.

A meme is also a form of digital art, it consists of funny faces or reactions and cartoons that imitated their jokes. Memes are used for amusement and something to bring happiness to those who are always online in social media. Due to the “Work from Home” practice. A teacher at Aklan State University tasked her students to make funny Memes about the COVID-19 as their project. The following students are from Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, which created the funny jokes and interpretations of the issues related to COVID-19. Here are some photos of their memes posted on their Facebook accounts with the #ASUCCOMProject:

Meme by Wella Alexa Baula
Meme by John Omar Gumban Tabay
Meme by Mariel Martinez II
Meme by Vincent Prado

Not only these memes serves as a way to cope up with boredom, but it also tells about the students are aware and taking precautions about the COVID-19. It is both funny and informative that people will look at it and laugh, at the same time they will gain knowledge. Even though we are facing these kinds of problems in our life, we always find a way to brighten up our day and still continue to spread positive vibes through our social media accounts.

And I just want to say to my fellow students and to our beloved teachers to stay safe and never lose hope.

We create art to express ourselves creatively. Our masterpiece is an embodiment of our personality and traits. Creating it is fulfillment in our mind, heart, and soul. It does not only tells stories but also depicts the latest happenings or controversial issues that are happening in the world.

As an artist, although art is a way to escape reality, it holds us back to see what is the truth behind the struggles of a single creation. Hours of sitting or standing, cost of the materials and beating the stigma like people who see art as a low-level profession. Apart from these wrestle of actuality, there is a never-ending battle.

Technology has influence art in a way by posting your work in social media to get an appreciation that follows positive vibes and a good way to be inspired. Likes, shares, and comments are mostly the bases whether the feedbacks is good or bad.

Theft by: Dot Dot Dot

Appreciation is a form of flattery, some may copy your style or produce in their own concept based on your invention, Rather than working hard or creating their style some will steal and claim it as their own.
Art theft, criminal activity involving the theft of art or cultural property, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and other objets d’art. (Kenneth polk, N.D)

Art thievery is the same as plagiarism and piracy. Some will take advantage of and make a profit without the owners’ permission to use their art pieces; this includes business websites that uses publicly posted photos or artworks without paying the creators.

I have seen a lot of these issues, especially on Facebook. Guhit Pinas is a group for many beginners and aspiring artists, it is where they share some tips and help other members of the group to harness their abilities in art. It is a place where they post amazing masterpieces like sketches, sculptures, painting, and many forms of visual arts. Some of the members will discredit the art, display it in the private accounts, and remove the signature of the real owners. To avoid Art Thieves from stealing your artwork here are some tips to help you based on Cary Hill (2017)

STEPS TO PREVENT SOMEONE STEALING YOUR WORK:
Watermark your work on social media: this makes it harder for someone to take your art and makes it impossible for someone to straight up a screenshot and repost your posts.
Sign it: never a bad idea to have a little signature near your work, and similar to watermarking!
Keep your sketches: keep the process art from your design – keep photos of it or even post pictures of it so that you can show that you a: started working on it before the person who stole the work posted it and b: can use that process art as proof that yes, this idea came from you.
Post pictures of your work IRL: if it’s a hand-drawn piece, take a picture of it in your notebook with the pen you used to create it, or a picture of it on your desk.
Add a copyright message: if you’re posting on Instagram, add in the description section a little copyright with your name and the date, as well as a warning to please not repost your images (maybe even a little “I’m watching you ” message).
Be nice to your fans: your fans and followers are a huge asset – they can alert you to people who might be trying to steal or copy your work, and can vouch for you as well.
COPYRIGHT DAT WORK! Copywriting your work isn’t a bad price to pay for protecting it
